Belongs within: Thoracosphaeraceae.
The Oodiniaceae are a group of dinoflagellates exhibiting an invasive parasitic stage (Fensome et al. 1993).
Characters (from Fensome et al. 1993): Parasitic trophont generally suboval to fusiform in outline, not exhibiting a typical dinoflagellate form; invasive organelle consisting of complex rhizoid-like absorptive structure; amphiesma usually pelliculate, occasionally tabulate. Reproduction by palintomic sporogenesis, with trophont detaching and its cytoplasm retracting from cell wall, dividing to produce numerous dinospores. Chromosomes decondensing during feeding stage, recondensing during palintomic sporogenesis. Cyst stage absent. Plastids occasionally present.
