Belongs within: Cosmochthonioidea.
The Cosmochthoniidae are a group of oribatid mites found in dry habitats such as dry soils. They are characterised by having four pairs of large erectile setae arising from transverse scissures on the notogaster. The notogaster is divided by three sutures in Krivolutskiella pubescens, Phyllozetes and Cosmochthonius but only two sutures in Nipponiella simplex (Balogh & Balogh 1992).
Characters (from Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009): Prodorsum and notogaster usually with reticulate or foveate sculpturing; rostrum distinctly fenestrate. Base of bothridial seta with conspicuous sharp proximal d bend. Setae of rows c–f occupying anterior half of notogaster; notogaster with threee transeverse scissures, such that rows c and d on separate plates, setal rows c and d not enlarged; rows e and f much longer than others, inserted on intercalary sclerites in two type S scissures. Opisthonotal gland absent. Genital plate not divided; aggenital plates small, not fused to coxisternum; adanal plates fused posteriorly to form a U shape. Legs with five free segments past coxisternum (femora undivided); pretarsi of legs bi- or tridactylous.
