The Tenuialidae are a family of oribatid mites characterised by the presence of a long humeral process. They are most abundant in forest litter in temperate regions of the Holarctic. Depressions in the podosoma allow members of this family to retract their legs (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009).
Characters (from Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009): Length 800–1200 µm. Subcapitulum diarthric; chelicerae chelate-dentate. Prodorsum and notogaster smooth, shiny. Prodorsum with true lamellae. Notogaster with longhumeral processes projecting anterolaterally to bothridium; octotaxic system absent; dorsophragmata and pleurophragmata present. Podosomal region with depressions for retracted legs; epimeral border IV with minitectum.
