Belongs within: Uropodoidea.
Uropoda is a genus of mites commonly found in manure or compost, or attached to insects as phoretic deuteronymphs. The subgenus Phaulodinychus, sometimes treated as a distinct genus, contains species inhabiting wrack on the seashore and possesses an ambulacra on the first leg tarsus; this ambulacra is absent in Uropoda sensu stricto. The seashore species Uropoda mitis is believed to respire via the plastron during regular periods when it is submerged by the tide (Lindquist et al. 2009). In forms sometimes treated as a distinct genus Cilliba, the marginal shield is posteriorly continuous whereas other species have it absent or fragmented towards the rear (Evans & Till 1979).
Characters (from Evans & Till 1979): Marginal shield absent posteriorly; genital shield of female produced into acute spine; levator tendon of movable digit of chelicera lacking a sclerotised node; palptibia and tarsus distinct, palpfemur with four setae; coxae I flattened, enlarged, concealing the tritosternum; legs I without ambulacra
