Gastrothrips is a genus of thrips found on dead twigs and branches in the tropics; they are distinctive in having three short and stout sense cones on the fourth antennal segment (Mound & Palmer 1983).
Characters (from Mound & Palmer 1983): Antennal segment III with one or two sense cones; segment IV with three short and stout sense cones. Head not reticulate. Eyes large, rounded, not prolonged ventrally. Maxillary stylets wide apart. Metathoracic sternopleural sutures present. Pelta usually triangular with lateral wings. Abdominal tergites each with one pair of wing-retaining setae. Anal tube frequently constricted at apex.
