I'm moving house.
Over the past few years, Blogger has become somewhat less user-friendly behind the scenes. Nothing major, and certainly nothing I'm going to bore you with here, but enough that I've finally decided to take the step of breaking out and moving to my own site: varietyoflife.com.au. This site will incorporate material from both Catalogue of Organisms and Variety of Life, progressively merging them into a single guide to global biodiversity. Posts from both blogs have already been migrated over, though now I have the long task of editing and updating them to match the new format. In the meantime, check out the page on Prostigmata to get an idea of what I'm planning to do. New content will also be appearing regularly.
Thank you for reading Variety of Life, and I hope to see you there!

Speleognathinae
Belongs within: Procurvata.
The Speleognathinae are a group of mites endoparasitic in the nasal mucosa of birds and mammals. They have no active instars between larva and adult with all three nymphal instars being calyptostatic within the larval skin (Walter et al. 2009).

Omartacaridae
Belongs within: Hygrobatoidea.
The Omartacaridae are a group of interstitial water mites with a disjunct distribution in southern Asia, Australia and the Americas. Species have a soft integument, somewhat elongated idiosoma, all coxal plates grouped together with the medial edges of anterior coxal group noticeably longer than those of the posterior group, and suture lines between coxal plates III–IV extending at right angles to the midline or slightly posterolaterally (Walter et al. 2009).
