Belongs within: Cecidomyiidae.
Contains: Oligotrophini, Alycaulini, Asphondyliini.
The Cecidomyiinae are a diverse group of midges, many of which cause galls in plants but which also include non-galling phytophagous, mycophagous and predatory forms (Gagné 1981). They are divided between four supertribes, of which the Cecidomyiidi are characterised by male genitalia with parameres rudimentary or absent, as well as by twelve-segmented antennae with flagellomeres cylindrical in females and usually binodal in males (Gagné & Jaschhof 2009).
Characters (from Gagné & Jaschhof 2009): Ocelli absent. Rs usually absent or weaker than other veins and evanescent at junction at R1, with base of M (M+rm) straight or at most weakly sinuous. Male gonocoxites free ventrally. Female cercus usually one-segmented, often fused mesally.
