Avenzoariidae

Male Scutomegninia microfalcifera from double-crested cormorant, copyright Heather Proctor, University of Alberta.

Belongs within: Analgoidea.

The Avenzoariidae are a group of mites parasitic on the wing and tail feathers of aquatic birds (OConnor 2009). They are divided between two subfamilies: Bonnetellinae possess three ventral setae on the third tarsus and males have the third pair of legs larger than the fourth whereas Avenzoariinae have one ventral seta on the third tarsus and the third legs are no larger than the fourth in males (Mironov 1991).

Characters (from OConnor 2009): Genu III with solenidion ς present; tibia IV with 1 ventral seta; tarsi with proral setae absent; ventral surface of tarsi I-II completely sclerotised; tarsus I with solenidion ω1 inserted basally; pretarsi with ambulacral stalks shorter than tarsi; ambulacral stalk with parallel sides, arising from apex of tarsus; stalk subdivided, with basal portion apically truncated, spherical distally; ambulacral discs narrowing apically, with central sclerite almost as wide as disc; lateral sclerites of ambulacral disc evenly sclerotised, without lacunae.
