Belongs within: Aptychophora.
Contains: Arctocephalitinae, Cadoceratinae.
The Stephanocerataceae are a Jurassic group of ammonites, the shells of which commonly show sharp ribbing. This group includes the heteromorphic families Spiroceratidae and Acuariceratidae, in which the shells were openly coiled or arcuate (Wiedmann 1969).
Characters (from Engeser & Keupp 2002): Sphaerocone, cadicone or oxycone conchs, generally with sharp ribbing. Suture line complex with well-developed lateral and umbilical lobe.
