Platypodidae

Common ambrosia beetle Platypus parallelus, from Pest and Diseases Image Library.

Belongs within: Phytophaga.

The Platypodidae, ambrosia beetles, are a family of beetles in which the majority of species feed on fungi growing in the tunnels they bore in dead wood. So far as is known, this habit is not present in the Coptonotinae; instead, Schedlarius at least is directly xylophagous (Wood 1986).

Characters (from Wood 1986): Adult with tarsal segment 1 elongate, usually longer than 2-5 combined (except shorter in some Coptonotinae); tibiae armed on apical and/or lateral margins by one or more spines, never by socketed denticles, apical mucro formed by middle apical spine; male spiculum gastrale absent; antennal club solid, unmarked by sutures (feebly indicated in Coptonotus); head about as wide as pronotum; eyes convex, never truly emarginate; pronotum with distinct lateral constriction near middle, never armed with asperities; when visible, scutellum often reduced, declivous, usually with not more than apex attaining (flush with) elytral surface; metepisternum very elongate, its anterior margin straight, its anteroventral angle neither displaced caudad nor extended ventrad; mesepimeron flat, vertical; mesepisternum moderately to greatly enlarged, varying from flat to inflated. Larva with clypeus usually fused to frons; frontal sutures reaching articulating membrane of mandible or not.
