Catocalinae

Blue underwing Catocala fraxini, copyright Harald Süpfle.

Belongs within: Erebidae.
Contains: Ophiusini.

The Catocalinae is a highly diverse group of moths characterised by the presence of an unscaled region on the lower clyeofrons (Moths of Borneo). Phylogenetic analysis suggests that the group as historically recognised is not monophyletic (Zahiri et al. 2011).

Synapomorphies (from Reza Zahiri): Juxta is shaped like an inverted Y, with anterior (ventral) ends heavily fused with sacculus; ostium bursae positioned variably but opening has moved anteriorly onto 7th abdominal segment rather than between 7th and 8th segments, with partial fusion between segments 7 and 8.
