Achatinellidae

Oahu tree snail Achatinella mustelina, photographed by Brenden Holland.

Belongs within: Stylommatophora.

The Achatinellidae are an exclusively Indo-Pacific group of very small snails (Stanisic et al. 2010).

Characters (from Stanisic et al. 2010): Shells very small, conical to elongate; whorls generally rounded. Sutures moderately indented; umbilicus usually absent. Lip simple, not reflected. Aperture ovate; columella spirally twisted to straight, may have a small lamella; small lamella also usually present on parietal wall. Apertural barriers varying in size during growth of shell, juveniles generally having more prominent barriers compared to adults. Foot short, broad, with very sticky viscous mucus that can be drawn out in strands.
